Located in Murchison Falls National Park Budongo Forest Reserve is 793 square kilometers of which only 53% forest and the rest grassland. Budongo Forest boasts of a high biopersity with 24 species if small animals 9 of which are primates, 465 species of trees and shrubs, 359 species of birds, 289 species of butterflies and 130 species of moths. The forest is renowned for its high number of mahogany trees and chimpanzees. The forest is believed to contain some 600-700 chimpanzees.
As a result of this great biopersity two eco-tourism sites have been set and optimized for tour activities – Kaniyo Padidi and Busingiro eco tourism sites. These two sites have chimpanzees that have been habituated for chimpanzee tracking. Trail networks have been established for nature walks. You get an up-close view of the mahogany trees, iron wood trees and other vegetation.
In addition to the chimpanzees and other primate species such as monkeys, one can also view several bird species such as Chocolate-backed kingfisher, the White-thighed Hornbill and Puvel’s illadiposis found nowhere else in East. The area is relatively flat and thus easy to trek.
Meet with your driver guide from your Kampala/Entebbe hotel and set off by 7:30 am. Along with your driver, head north through the historical Luwero Triangle (you shall be given an overview of what makes the history of this place and its implication on Uganda), Nakansongola, to kabalega Dinners for our lunch. After our lunch we shall check in to Murchison Falls National Park.
On arrival in the park we shall start off with an evening nature walk into the forest. We shall end our evening nature walk in Budongo Forest at around 6:00 pm and check in at Budongo Eco Lodge for our dinner and overnight.
We shall have early morning breakfast after which we go for the chimpanzee tracking briefing at Kaniyo Padidi. We then start our chimpanzee tracking. The evocative pant-hoot calls are characteristic of the forest and will contribute in guiding you to these delightful apes.
You will observe these delightful apes and may also get an opportunity to participate in the chimpanzee habituation process that will give more interaction with man closest relatives. The habituation process involves among other activities feeding them and mimicking their different actions as they do yours. We end this memorable wildlife encounter at around 12:00 pm. We then check out of the park have lunch in Masindi town and then drive back to Kampala.
