Akagera National Park is found in eastern Rwanda, along the border with Tanzania, and is one of East Africa’s most diverse natural landscapes, combining savannah plains, rolling hills, glittering lakes, papyrus swamps, and forested shores.
Akagera is named after the Kagera River, which forms the park’s eastern boundary and feeds into Lake Ihema, among other smaller lakes and wetlands, together making it the largest protected wetland system in central-eastern Africa.
Visitors to Akagera are rewarded with superb wildlife sightings, calmer safari environments, and immersive nature experiences away from the busiest tourist routes.

Big Five Safari – Akagera is now home to all of Africa’s Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros, the rhinos were successfully reintroduced after decades of absence.
Thriving Wildlife Populations – Thanks to major conservation efforts since 2010, wildlife numbers have increased dramatically, with many species now stable and visible during game drives.
Water Safari Experience – About one-third of the park is water, making boat safaris on Lake Ihema an unforgettable way to see hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and scenic sunsets.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise – With hundreds of bird species, including rare marsh dwellers, Akagera is ideal for birdwatching year-round.
Peaceful & Less Crowded – Visitor numbers are moderate compared to some African parks, so you often enjoy wildlife sightings without the crowds.
Akagera National Park was established in 1934 during the colonial era and originally covered an even larger area of wilderness.
The park suffered severe declines in wildlife due to years of civil unrest and poaching, especially around the 1990s. But since 2010, partnership management by African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board has dramatically improved protection and restoration.
Historic reintroductions include:
Lions (2015)
Eastern black rhinos (2017 & 2019)
Southern white rhinos (2021)
These efforts helped rebuild the populations of key species, making Akagera a major conservation success story in Africa.
